Singapore and Malaysia share a long and complex history, including political, economic, and social ties. One of the key components of their relationship is the cross-border transport infrastructure that connects the two countries. One such infrastructure project is the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which is currently under construction. Let's take a closer look at this project and its progress so far.
What is the Singapore-JB RTS Link?
The Singapore-JB RTS Link is a proposed cross-border rail link between Singapore and Johor Bahru (JB), Malaysia. It aims to improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion between the two cities. The project was first proposed in 2010, and an agreement was signed in 2018 between the Malaysian and Singaporean governments to proceed with the construction.
Current Progress
The construction of the RTS Link began in November 2019, and as of March 2023, it is approximately 30% complete. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Construction on the Singapore side is progressing well, with work on the viaduct and station ongoing. The construction of the depot, which will house the trains, has also started. On the Malaysian side, the work is focused on building the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) complex in Bukit Chagar.
SMRT RTS Pte Ltd, an SMRT Group subsidiary, and Prasarana RTS Operations Sdn Bhd formed a joint venture - RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO) in July 2020. RTSO has been awarded a 30-year concession to own, design, install, test, operate, and maintain the Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) Assets between Bukit Chagar, Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and Woodlands North, Singapore. RTSO will also operate and maintain the Wadi Hana depot in Johor Bahru.
Commenting on SMRT’s efforts, SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming, said: “When we work together, the good we achieve is not just for ourselves now, but also for the generations that come after us.”
SMRT Chairman, further added: “Our work is purposeful. We promise to do the right things right no matter how challenging it is to do so. We want to also do good and do well for our employees, our customers, and the communities around us.”
While SMRT CEO, Ngien Hoon Ping, mentioned: “We pursue collective and continuous excellence. This is the heart of our Kaizen philosophy.”
Challenges and Solutions
Like any major infrastructure project, the Singapore-JB RTS Link has faced challenges along the way. One of the significant challenges was the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that hit the world in 2020, which affected the supply chain and workforce at that time. To mitigate these challenges, the project has implemented strict safety measures and has also been working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure the smooth flow of goods and labor.
Another challenge is the project's location in a densely populated urban area, which has required careful planning and coordination to minimise disruption to the surrounding communities. The project has implemented noise barriers, dust control measures, and regular communication with residents to address their concerns.
Benefits of the RTS Link
Once completed, the RTS Link is expected to provide numerous benefits to both countries. It will significantly reduce travel time between Singapore and JB, from the current 1-2 hours by road to only 30 minutes by train. This will improve connectivity and facilitate economic and social interactions between the two cities.
The RTS Link will also increase the capacity for cross-border travel, allowing more people to work and live in either country. Additionally, it is expected to create job opportunities and boost economic growth in the surrounding areas.
Conclusion
The Singapore-JB RTS Link is a crucial infrastructure project that will improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion between Singapore and Malaysia. Now, the project is progressing well, with construction currently at around 30% completion. Once completed, the RTS Link is expected to provide numerous benefits to both countries, including reduced travel time, increased cross-border travel capacity, job opportunities, and economic growth.
